The JOY LIPSALA gallery, founded by Rudolf Van Hoof, is a new contemporary art gallery and platform, that aims to promote established and emerging contemporary Belgian and international artists, with origins from mainly ‘exotic’ (i.e. non-Western European) places, and to offer, with their artworks manifesting their diverse identity and back-ground, to the Belgian art lover a path to enjoy new art horizons.
Besides to art lovers and collectors, JOY LIPSALA addresses to interior architects and designers to enrich their projects with unique art works.
In that context JOY LIPSALA will be glad to cooperate with Belgian art stakeholders, as well as foreign art galleries, this for both directions: to promote international artists here in Belgium, as well as vice-versa: to promote the works of Belgian, European contemporary artists outside Europe.
The name JOY LIPSALA finds its origin in the colourful, art loving Bangkok, vibrant capital of Thailand.
I am very pleased to bring the artworks of two Thai artists Pex Pitakpong Jamesripong and Thanwa Huangsmut, for the first time presented in Europe, on the Reveal Art Fair in Brussels!

De JOY LIPSALA galerij, opgericht door Rudolf Van Hoof, is een nieuwe kunstgalerij en -platform, dat gevestigde en opkomende hedendaagse Belgische en internationale kunstenaars, komende uit voornamelijk ‘exotische’ (i.e. niet-westeuropese) oorden, wil promoten en met hun kunstwerken waarmee ze hun identeit en achtergrond tonen, aan de kunstliefhebber een pad naar diverse kunst-horizonten bieden.
Naast kunstliefhebbers en collectioneurs, richt JOY LIPSALA zich ook tot interieur-architecten en designers om hun projecten te verrijken met unieke kunstwerken.
In dat kader staat JOY LIPSALA open voor samenwerking met zowel Belgische kunstactoren, als buitenlandse kunstgalerijen, dit in beide richtingen: om internationale kunst hier in België, als vice versa: de werken van Belgische, Europese moderne kunstenaars buiten Europa te promoten.
De naam JOY LIPSALA vindt haar oorsprong in het kleurrijke Bangkok, sprankelende hoofdstad van Thailand.
Het is voor mij een grote eer om werken te brengen van twee Thaise kunstenaars Pex Pitakpong Jamesripong en Thanwa Huangsmut, voor het eerst in Europa, met name op de Reveal Art Fair in Brussel.
PEX PITAKPONG JAMESRIPONG :

Pex Pitakpong Jamesripong was born in 1971 in Bangkok. In 1991 Pex Pitakpong graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication Arts at the Silpakorn University Bangkok and he started his professional career as illustrator for various magazines. Since childhood he was passionate about art and pop culture, particularly Japanese manga and anime. By 2015 he started his career as a fine art painter, he created the character ”Mari” and had his first solo exhibition.
With his artworks mainly in the pop-art style of anime and manga, very popular in Asiatic countries (f.e. famous Japanese artists Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara), Pex Pitakpong invites the audience to take care of the inner child. With his playful and lovely characters in vibrant colours the artist reveals his own complex emotions, deep thoughts and concerns on actual problems towards society.
The past years, the works of Pex Pitakpong have been exhibited on numerous solo and group exhibitions by galleries in Thailand, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, China, Japan and USA.
The Japanese gallery Nanzuka (representing famous artists as Hajime Sorayama, Keeichi Tanaami) represents Pex Pitakpong Jamesripong and showed his works on their recent group exhibition “Empathy” at Art Basel Hong Kong, March 26-30, 2025.

Geboren in 1971 in Bangkok en afgestudeerd met een bachelor-diploma in Visuele Communicatie Kunst in 1991, begon Pex Pitakpong zijn professionele carrière als illustrator voor diverse tijdschrijften. Van kindsaf al fan van de Japanse manga en anime, creëerde hij in 2015 zijn personage ”Mari” en startte zijn carrière als full-time kunstenaar-schilder.
Met zijn werken die zich voornamelijk situeren in de pop-art stijl van anime en manga, zeer populair in aziatische landen (bv. de wereldbekende Japanse kunstenaars Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara),
roept Pex Pitakpong de toeschouwers op om te zorgen voor het innerlijke kind in henzelf. Via zijn speelse en charmante figuren in felle kleuren drukt de kunstenaar diverse complexe emoties, diepgaande gedachten en bezorgdheden over actuele problematieken in de maatschappij uit.
De werken van Pex Pitakpong werden de voorbije jaren getoond op talrijke solo- en groepstentoonstellingen door galerijen in Thailand, Taiwan, Zuid-Korea, Hong Kong, China, Japan en USA. De Japanse galerij Nanzuka (die in haar portfolio kunstenaars als Hajime Sorayama en Keeichi Tanaami voert) vertegenwoordigt Pex Pitakpong Jamesripong en toonde zijn werken op hun recente groepstentoonstelling “Empathy” tijdens Art Basel Hong Kong, 26-30 maart 2025.
“The Voice of Innocence”

The latest solo exhibition of Pex Pitakpong was organised by the Joyman Studio gallery in Bangkok : “The Voice of Innocence”, March 2 - 30, 2025.
The three works that Joy Lipsala gallery shows on Reveal Art Fair, were selected from this solo exhibition “The Voice of Innocence”.
Pex Pitakpong created more than 100 drawings and paintings of children during his free moments, in a relaxed state, free of commitments. The artist painted and wrote spontaneously, without pre-sketching, and instinctively applied colours, grabbing whatever materials nearby: pens, leftover acrylic paint on palettes, pastels, paper from book pages, cardboard and sketchbook paper.
Beyond its distinctive visual language, each artwork prominently features handwritten text: straightforward phrases or sentences, primarily in Thai. The artist believes that using Thai immediately identifies the work as that of a Thai artist. These phrases express thoughts on current situations, memories, personal preferences, love, sensitivity, anger, happiness, sorrow, and pleading. They connect with history, society, emotions, philosophy, and culture. Some words are crossed out, leaving traces of unfiltered sincerity: what the artist describes as a childlike way of speaking, honest and unembellished.
The artist’s reflection: “My work contains contradictions: there is both cuteness and ugliness, just like the world itself. These children I draw include boys, girls, and those without a defined gender, because I see it as something broader, unrestricted. In today’s society, gender isn’t confined to just male or female: it’s about what a person wants to be.
I see ‘childhood’ in two ways. Some people grow up but still carry a childlike essence within them, hidden yet present. At times, a child might even possess greater wisdom than an adult, appearing as a mature mind in a youthful form.”
In a social context, the works of Pex Pitakpong remind us of the importance of protecting children and ensuring a safe environment for them. At the same time, it can be seen as a critique of a society where some adults, driven by power and insatiable desires, strip away peace, shatter dreams, and erode the fundamental goodwill that should exist between human beings.
I am pleased to welcome children and adults to enjoy together the lovely works of the Thai artist Pex Pitakpong Jamesripong.

De recentste solo-tentoonstelling van Pex Pitakpong werd georganiseerd door de galerij Joyman Studio in Bangkok : “The Voice of Innocence”, 2 - 30 maart.
De drie werken die Joy Lipsala toont op Reveal Art Fair, komen uit deze solo-tentoonstelling “The Voice of Innocence” (“De Stem van de Onschuld”) .
Pex Pitakpong creëerde meer dan 100 tekeningen en schilderijen van kinderen gedurende zijn vrije momenten, in een ontspannen gemoedstoestand, vrij van verplichtingen. De kunstenaar tekende en schreef spontaan, zonder voorafgaande schetsen, en kleurde instinctief met en op materiaal dat toevallig bij de hand lag: pennen, restjes acryl verf, pastels, papier uit boeken, karton, tekenpapier.
Naast de onderscheidende visuele taal wordt ieder werk prominent gekenmerkt door handgeschreven tekst: rechttoe-rechtaan zinssnedes of zinnen, hoofdzakelijk in het Thais. De kunstenaar gelooft dat door het Thaise schrift te gebruiken het werk onmiddellijk geïdentificeerd wordt als dat van een Thaise kunstenaar. De geschreven zinnen drukken gedachtes uit over actuele situaties, herinneringen, persoonlijke wensen, liefde, gevoeligheid, boosheid, geluk, zorgen, en pleidooien. Ze zijn verbonden met de maatschappij, geschiedenis, emoties, filosofie en cultuur. Soms zijn woorden zelfs doorstreept, en laten sporen van een ongefilterde eerlijkheid: hetgeen de kunstenaar omschrijft als de kinderlijke manier om te spreken, eerlijk en onopgesmukt.
De artiest bezint: “Mijn werk bevat tegenstrijdigheden: er zit tegelijk schattigheid en lelijkheid in, net als in de wereld zelf. De kinderen die ik teken, zijn jongens, meisjes, en zij zonder een gedefinieerd gender, omdat ik het zie als iets breder, onbegrensd. In onze hedendaagse maatschappij is het gender niet beperkt tot uitsluitend mannelijk of vrouwelijk: het gaat om wie, wat een persoon wil zijn.
Ik zie het kind-zijn op twee manieren. Sommige personen groeien op, maar dragen in zich nog een kinderlijke essentie, verborgen, maar toch aanwezig. Soms kan een kind meer wijsheid bezitten dan een volwassen en toont een volwassen bewustzijn in een jeugdige vorm.”
In een sociale context kunnen deze werken van Pex Pitakpong ons herinneren aan het belang om kinderen te beschermen en hen een veilige omgeving te garanderen.
Ik verwelkom graag kinderen en volwassen om samen te genieten van de heerlijke werken van de Thaise kunstenaar Pex Pitakpong Jamesripong.
THANWA HUANGSMUT

Thanwa Huangsmut, born in 1980 in Nonthaburi, Thailand, graduated with a Bachelor and Master of Fine Art from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts at the Silpakorn University. He became a full-time professional artist and for already more than 20 years his works have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions.
The artist is interested in the relationship between humans and nature. All of which are expressed through his semi-surrealistic style of paintings which contain symbols of femininity, the power of creatures, architectures and nature. Thanwa Huangsmut creates his vibrant artworks on paper and oil paintings on canvas with his outstanding technique.

Thanwa Huangsmut, geboren in 1980 in Nonthaburi, Thailand, behaalde zijn bachelor- (BFA) en meesterdiploma (MFA) aan de faculteit van de Schilder-, Beeldhouw- en Grafische Kunsten van de Silpakorn universiteit. Hij werd full-time professioneel kunstenaar en gedurende al meer dan 20 jaar worden zijn werken in talrijke solo- en groepstentoonstellingen tentoongesteld.
De kunstenaar toont zijn interesse in de relatie tussen mensen en de natuur, waarin hij via zijn semi-surrealistische stijl symbolen van vrouwelijkheid, de kracht van schepsels, architecturen en de natuur uitdrukt. Thanwa creëert zijn magische kunstwerken op papier en olieverfschilderijen op doek met een hoogstaande techniciteit.

“The Symphony of Chroma Chiaroscuro”
The artworks presented by Joy Lipsala on the Reveal Art Fair, are part of the solo exhibition “The Symphony of Chroma Chiaroscuro” by Thanwa Huangsmut, June 20th to July 28th, 2024 at the Joyman Gallery in Bangkok. In his enchanting paintings Thanwa witnesses his love and reverence for nature, women, animals, and flora, and he pays homage to the beauty of women. She is represented as mother, queen (with horns as crown) of nature, powerful, yet tender. Exuding confidence, she looks straight in the eyes of the audience.
Chromatic Chiaroscuro (It.: light-dark) is a technique, used by painters as Caravaggio and Leonardo da Vinci, of balanced play of the high contrast light and shadow to provide the impression of depth in the painting to achieve a stronger dramatic effect.
Thanwa employs the Chiaroscuro techniques in his works emphasizing the weight of specific colour shades, this way highlighting warm tones’ vibrancy and cool tones’ heavy feel, juxtaposing intense emotions with deep melancholy.

“De Symfonie of Chroma Chiaroscuro”
De werken die Joy Lipsala op de Reveal Art Fair toont, komen uit de solo-tentoonstelling “The Symphony of Chroma Chiaroscuro” van Thanwa Huangsmut in de Joyman Gallery, 20 juni tot 28 juli 2024, in Bangkok.
In zijn betoverende werken getuigt Thanwa van zijn liefde en ontzag voor de natuur, vrouwen, dieren en flora, en brengt hij hulde aan de schoonheid van de vrouw die wordt voorgesteld als de moeder, koningin (met hoorns als kroon) van de wonderlijke natuur.
Chromatic Chiaroscuro (It.: licht-donker) is een techniek, die werd gebruikt door schilders als Caravaggio en Leonardo da Vinci, om via een gebalanceerd spel van contrasterend licht en schaduw de indruk van diepte in het schilder te wekken voor een sterker dramatisch effect.
Via de Chiaroscuro technieken geeft Thanwa meer gewicht aan specifieke kleurschakeringen, laat hij warme tinten met koele zwaarmoedige tinten vibreren, en beroert hij ons met intens vreugdevolle emoties en diepe melacholie.
In Thanwa Huangsmut’s schilderijen zitten zoveel details en fantasie verborgen, dat je bij het bekijken keer op jeer nieuwe schoonheid ontdekt.
